In front and all around them they could see many pairs of eyes, small eyes, shining eyes, eyes that hinted whatever it was they should be afraid. Cal's grip on Daisy's hand tightened. She almost screamed.

"Rats," whispered Cal, heaving a sigh of relief. “Don’t be afraid. It’s rats.”

The rats stood unmoving now. The many eyes watched them. The rats seemed to sense the twin's fear. But suddenly Cal shouted. "Yaaah! Yaaah!" Then he began to stamp his right foot forward. "Yaaah!" His shouting echoed along the passage as the eyes quickly vanished and the scuffling of the rats, as they scuttled away, quickly diminished.

Cal was the first to speak. "Come on," he whispered, gently pulling Daisy on. His heart was pounding almost as loud as his sister’s.

Minutes later they came to a part of the passage that was lit by a small shaft of light shining from above. Looking up, they could see a tiny hole in the damaged brickwork ceiling of the passage roof. The hole was allowing a shaft of moonlight through.

"We must be near the outside," reasoned Cal.

"How can that be Cal? We must be going the wrong way," whispered Daisy. "The cross is supposed to be buried under Seahope, not outside it." She peered along the passage.

"But there was only one way we could go," said Cal. "This passage must change direction further ahead. Come on."

They had only gone a few meters when they came to a junction. A passage ran to their right and another to their left.

"What do we do now, Cal?" asked Daisy, looking along both of the dark passages.

"I don't know. Maybe we should go right. What do you think?"

Daisy nodded. "We can always come back if it leads nowhere."

But as Cal moved to lead them along the right hand passage, something strange happened. Daisy gave a sudden cry when she felt a burning sensation on her left shoulder. She gaped at Cal when a beam of light flashed from her broach and shone directly into the left hand passage. The light stayed on the passage for several seconds before fading.

Frowning Cal turned to his sister. She quickly explained about the old woman, the broach and the man and woman in the train. When she was finished Cal said, "Well it looks like a decision has been made for us. Come on." Slowly he led the way into the left hand passage.

They walked along the passage for several minutes, the sound of their footsteps on the wet floor echoing all around them. The passage they were in was now so dark they could hardly see each other, but Cal kept a tight grip on his sister's hand as he led her slowly on. Once or twice Daisy had to brush thick cobwebs from her face and hair. She shuddered as she wondered how big the spiders that had made the webs were. She was glad though they had encountered no more rats. She preferred the horror of spiders to the threat of rats.
